Knowing how to get a hunting license in Louisiana can make the process much easier for you when you are ready to actually make the purchase. An online hunting license application is now available in LA, so be sure to review the requirements and options for buying it efficiently online. In addition to the license, a permit for hunting is required of most hunters for specific wildlife or specific seasons. You will need to obtain all the required and relevant licenses and permits before you go into the field, and make sure you carry proof of all valid documentation on your person.

If you buy a pass for hunting online, you will not receive an actual card. The hunting license cost will also vary based on how you purchase it, so you should account for those slight differences when making your plans. Ensuring that you have the right paperwork in time before the season begins is very important, so do your research well in advance to avoid any problems.

Where to Buy a Hunting License in Louisiana

Some hunting credentials in Louisiana require additional supporting documentation to approve your qualifications. Those special passes often require you to apply in person or by mail, according to the specific instructions provided on the application. Those licenses might include the Military License, the Lifetime License or others requiring proof of identity and eligibility. For the Basic Louisiana hunters license and many other generally common licenses, you can choose from a wider variety of purchasing methods.

Louisiana Hunting License Requirements

The age for a hunting license in Louisiana is 16, with any hunters younger than 16 not requiring a license yet. Any resident or nonresident hunters aged 16 or older are required to have at least a Basic Hunting License to hunt, take, possess or transport any wild birds or quadrupeds during the appropriate hunting seasons. Keep in mind that certain hunting education requirements are also in place for certain hunters in the state, and must be met prior to the application for any credentials.

Special permits or licenses are required for the use of a bow or for a primitive firearm. Additional special licenses and permits are required to hunt, take, possess or transport any of the following:

  • Deer
  • Turkey
  • Bobcat
  • Migratory waterfowl

The Louisiana hunter permit requirements are waived if you hold a Mississippi hunting license and want to hunt along the islands and waters of the Mississippi River. You will be able to hunt wild game birds and quadrupeds that border both Louisiana and Mississippi.

Louisiana Hunters License Age Exceptions

There are a few exceptions for getting a Louisiana hunters pass. If you fall into certain age categories, then you are not required to get the Basic, Big Game, Bow or Primitive Firearm hunter licenses, nor the Louisiana Duck or Turkey stamps. The following individuals are exempt from getting those licenses, but are required to have proof of age while in the field:

Residents and nonresidents younger than 16 years of age

Louisiana residents born before June 1, 1940, who have lived in Louisiana for six months

State Laws That Apply When You Get Hunting License Credentials in Louisiana

You must renew a hunting license for each new year, which is according to the hunting laws of the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission, and not according to the regular calendar. You can apply for hunting license credentials for the new year when the annual licenses go on sale on June 1st. The annual hunter’s pass is a valid from the date of purchase, with all licenses from that year expiring on June 30th each year.

In order to buy a resident hunter credential you must pass the Bona Fide Residence test. To do so, you must have continuously lived in the state for the previous six months immediately leading up to the date when you apply for a hunting license, and you must have made Louisiana your main residence, which you can prove through the following:

  • You registered to vote in Louisiana
  • You obtained a Louisiana driver’s license
  • You registered your vehicle in Louisiana, if you have a motor vehicle
  • You have filed a state income tax return in Louisiana, if you are employed and earn income in the state
  • You do not hold a license from any other state or country

If you buy a resident hunters pass when you do not qualify, per the above details, then you might be subjected to criminal and/or civil sanctions.
